A winner has been chosen in the City of Rockingham’s Selfie with a Senior competition, with Kelly Powell’s selfie announced as the winner.
The Selfie with a Senior competition encouraged community members to take a selfie with a senior and add a short description of why they chose that person.
The City received 60 entries from people of all ages and backgrounds who celebrated their grandparents, great-grandparents, neighbours, volunteers, friends and mentors.Kelly posing with her senior friends in an office setting.
City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said “Kelly Powell was the winner of $500 and was selected because of her dedication to honouring seniors and breaking down the stigma and stereotypes of old age.”
“Seniors are the heart and memory of the community so it was fantastic to see so many people celebrating them by embracing the Selfie with a Senior competition.
“It was a wonderful reflection on the deep respect and love that participants have for older people in our community.”
Ms Powell’s entry was announced as the winner during Seniors Week 2018, a nationwide event held annually to acknowledge the positive contribution seniors make to society.
“Campaigns such as the Selfie with a Senior competition play a vital role in changing the way we think about ageing and removing the harmful stereotypes that are associated with growing old.”
The description provided with Ms Powell’s winning selfie was as follows:
“I work for Coastal District Care Centre Emergency Relief. Most of our volunteers are seniors. They have taught me so many valuable lessons about life, friendship, love and acceptance. They buoy up our clients with caring, compassion and laughter and ask for nothing in return.
I took this photo of three of our volunteers and myself to show the friendships and love that are created despite age differences and (to) breakdown the stigma and stereotypes of old age. These people aren’t old, they’re the perfect example of vintage… better and more valuable as they age.”
