For many of us Christmas is a special time of year.

It is an opportunity to relax, enjoy some time off and celebrate with family and friends. While it is a very enjoyable time of year for some, it can also be a real challenge for others, particularly for people who may be disadvantaged, lonely or isolated. As we get set to wind down for the year, I encourage everyone to take a moment to consider those who are less fortunate and to embrace the spirit of Christmas in their local community.

This year the City has commenced some exciting projects, the largest being stage one of the Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation. Great progress has been made since the project began in late July. Construction has stopped for the summer season, and all the fencing and equipment has been removed, so I encourage residents to head down over the summer break to check out the progress that’s been made and to support the wide range of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. Construction at the foreshore will resume on 18 February 2019.

While most of us get the chance to relax over the holiday break please spare a thought for the brave men and women in our police, emergency services and defence forces, especially those based at HMAS Stirling that are away, who will be working hard to keep us safe. It’s sure to be a busy period for them, so let’s do our bit to stay safe and ensure they all have a quiet Christmas this year.

After the Christmas festivities end we turn our attentions to ringing in the New Year. It is my pleasure to invite all residents to the City’s official New Year’s Eve Celebration at the Foreshore on Monday 31 December. From 5pm there will be entertainment for all ages and food vendors with fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight.

Whatever you are doing, where ever you may be going, I hope Christmas is everything you wished it would be. Please stay safe on the roads and look out for your family and friends if you are heading out to celebrate over the holiday period.

On behalf of my fellow councillors and the staff at the City of Rockingham, I would like to wish everyone in our community a merry Christmas and a happy, safe and prosperous New Year.
